Unraveled - Chapter 3 - An Invitation
Characters introduced in this Chapter
Brenn – Mirra’s former best friend
Discussion of Mirra’s mother and Father.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
“Knock Knock!” Mirra stood up and went to the door, abandoning the rerun of ‘Lost’ She was watching.
“ Ready to work?” Sadie said, standing at her door in capri sweat pants, and an old Abercrombie Top.
“Sure” Mirra was excited, she found a friend within just a day. They started to unpack her clothing, and her decorations for her walls, rugs, and so on. One by one, they went through each box, on the last one, they cut the tape, and Sadie looked at Mirra with a long, swept smile on her face.
“ Wanna go out?” Sadie grinned.
“ Out? You mean, like dancing out… or like party out?” Mirra got nervous. She hated meeting a lot of people at once.
“ Let’s just say, it’s a great experience that not many get to experience. But, you can’t tell anyone about it. It’s a secret underground… well, club of sorts. It’s is only open to very few groups of elite friends and family. You’ll love it though, and I know they’ll love you. “
‘How did she know? She doesn’t even know me that well ‘ Mirra thought. ‘ why is she inviting me … there has to be some hidden agenda. ‘ Was she doubting and judging again, or was this her gut? She couldn’t tell. That alone scared the hell out of her.
So in a rush to answer, she muttered “ Is it safe?” she figured, better safe than sorry.
“ I really can’t tell you a whole lot unless I have your sincere promise that you would never tell anyone about it. If you do, it could be dangerous yes. But Mirra, I know that you will fit in perfectly.“
“ Who do I know Sadie? “ She felt hot.. and upset.
“ I’m sorry, but it’s very important. And listen, if you don’t want to come out with me, then forget I ever said anything!”
Mirra felt bad now. “ I’m sorry Sadie. This is all so new still. I just don’t want to get myself into an uncomfortable situation. Please don’t be angry with me. I do want to go out, and promise not to tell anyone. “ She really didn’t want to ruin her chances of making a genuine friend in Sadie.
She hated the feeling of rejection, especially when she felt the guilt of fault. She realized why what she said had upset Sadie. What was she going to do, kidnap her? Besides, what was Sadie’s sudden interest in her, trusting her not to tell anyone, even though she had just met her?
“ It’s ok. I understand. Get ready. I’ll be back in two hours . I promise, you will have a good time . “
She left quickly. Mirra wasn’t sure if she had gotten back on her good side fully or not. She was puzzled at how Sadie didn’t have a more substantial thing to say after the comment she had made.
When Sadie left. Mirra sat down.
She started to think. Would she find someone here like her? Different, with her abilities maybe? Someone she could trust, and live peacefully?
See, another reason Mirra was considered so different, was that she had a special gift.
When Mirra was young, she dabbled in witchcraft. Only to find out, she had a real knack for it.
Not realizing, until she was 12, that her Mother, Who died when she was 4, was also a ‘ witch ‘ of sorts. So, with her newfound power, she felt great burden after a few years. She kept it secret from almost everyone, everyone except Brenn. Brenn was Mirra’s close friend, he was same age as her, a little on the weird side, but got Mirra. He knew how she functioned, and carried many of the same burdens, and Abilities, that she had. He moved to her town from Chicago, and was also a ‘witch’. He was sent for her. She learned from him. Mirra had always called herself a ‘ witch ‘ .
“Those are the old days Mirra.. We don’t like to be called ‘ witches ‘, we prefer ‘ Vens ‘.”
Mirra and Brenn, fall in a class of Veneficas, Italian for Witch, and Brenn taught Mirra her Craft, her history, and about her Mother. Brenn was the first other ‘Ven’ She had met. He taught her of the Biblical History of her and his kind, the massive history of famous Vens, and the all around history of everything she was, and was going to be.
Most importantly of her immortality, although it came with a price. One Mirra hadn’t had to pay yet, but knew she would have to one day.
Once a lifetime, to take life forces, a Ven must absorb the life of another. Some Vens, were brutal in their taking, some weren’t. There were spells, to hypnotize, sedate, and ‘ remove ‘ them from themselves, so they can then, take over that life. Vens would mostly go in pairs, so they could continue their together, bear children, who would also be born Vens, and continue to live under the public eye.
If they failed their transition before their human body dies, the Ven dies with it.
Vens, also had a way of knowing another Ven as soon as they were within a few feet, Making it easy for them to band together after their ‘takings’, as well as meeting new ones throughout life.
Her mother died when she was 4, by the arm of another Ven, who had loved her, but she left him for a human, who was Mirra’s father.
He was also a Ven, but a powerful one. He cursed Mirra’s Mother, when she discovered she had bore a child to a human, which was not against the laws of a Ven, however, it upset him deeply, as his love for her was so big, he ended his life soon after as well.
Mirra knew that there were many other Vens in the world, and she was ready to meet them. Mirra was a very young Ven, a true 23. She had so much to learn, and when Brenn died in a car accident, she was left to fend for herself, and learn on her own. She always practiced what she knew, but as far as teaching herself went, she was left empty.
You can assure also, that if she came home to her aunt, with that kind of ‘ junk ‘. She would surely burn it at sight.
The hot water had made the bathroom hot, and foggy. It smelled of Vanilla. There were her new towels, and candles, all set up nice and neat. She felt at home, for the first time since she had arrived.
Mirra jumped in the shower, and started to get ready to leave with Sadie. She felt a sense of excitement, and fear, all at the same time.
“ This will be fun… Don’t be so nervous “ she told herself.

Unraveled - Chapter 2 - First Ties?
Chapter 2 - First Ties?
Characters introduced - Sadie 27 Female
----------------------------------------------------------
Mirra Awoke to a stiff neck, and someone knocking at her half open door.
“Oh my, Shit! I fell asleep “she said out loud. Cupping her mouth short after.
She flipped her hair around, and ran to the door. Spilling the rum from her unfinished drink. When she got to the door, there was a girl, who seemed to be a few years older than her, or maybe her age, but rough around the edges.
“I’m Sadie. Nice to meet ya, I’m in 2.” Sadie was tall, slender, and blonde. Really blonde. She had a voice of a third grade teacher. The mean kind. But seemed nice enough. “Can I come in? “She asked.
“Oh, yes. Sure, I’m sorry, come in.” Mirra stumbled, thinking of what an ass she must have just made of herself. Mirra started to laugh, “Drink? “She heard Sadie chuckle jokingly, “Actually, sure. That sounds good!” she pulled out a pack of Newports. “So, how old are you, I didn’t catch your name “
“Mirra, Mirra Styce. I’m 23. What about you? “
Sadie smiled, and said “How old do you think I am? “
Was this a trick question? ‘Oh god, ‘she thought.
“I don’t know, 24 maybe? “
Sadie laughed… “You are a sweetheart. I’m actually 27. “
Mirra felt a deep sense of relief. And went over to pour the drinks. She usually didn’t drink before noon. But, agreed. It sounded wonderful, especially with the cramp in her neck. She then drifted, while pouring, thinking, ‘how did I fall asleep like that? ‘.
“Drink ma’am” Mirra handed Sadie a Rum and Coke Mix. “ Yummo… We have similar tastes “Sadie said sweetly.
“ So you need help moving in, I’m just headed down to the grocer, then I’ll be back, I can make breakfast, and we can get double the work done. “ Sadie walked past the sofa. “Sure, that would be fantastic” Mirra said, without thinking, that maybe she wasn’t who she said she was.. But trusted that everything would be fine.
“That’s great… Do you mind if I smoke?”
Mirra didn’t smoke. Well not cigarettes anyway. She would when she drank, or smoked grass occasionally. But never really liked them otherwise, even though she wanted to say ‘no’…
“Sure, go ahead. I’ll grab an ashtray.”
She walked to a box, in the kitchen, and found a candle lid, and walked back into the living room. Sadie was leaning over the back of the sofa. “Thank you, so where you from?”
“Well, I’m from a small town in Missouri, you wouldn’t know it. It’s close to St. Louis though, if that helps any. Lots of Farms, lots of country radio stations. Lots of nothing. Good people though. “She realized she was rambling.
“I see. “ Mirra stood through the awkward silence. “So, what about you, you from the NYC Area?”
‘Who says NYC Area Mirra ‘she thought?
“No, actually I’m from Sweden. “ She noticed her blonde hair again. It was natural. “I moved here when I was 4. Grew up in Massachusetts. But I have no ties there anymore, so I figured, I would move to the, ‘Big Apple ‘. See where it took me ya know? “
Mirra Smiled. She felt like they kinda connected just then. Sadie finished her Rum and coke and said. “So, I’ll see you in twenty “she noticed the look on Sadie’s face had gone from sweet, to sour. Mirra acted like she didn’t notice, just so she didn’t seem rude. But, found herself very curious. Why would she be upset over that? Maybe something happened… she shook her head, and thought to herself. ‘I’ll ask later. ‘
“Ok! Thanks Sadie! “ She heard her yell from downstairs “I’m grabbing my keys, and I’ll be back! “, and she heard her go into her apartment. “ Whew “she made a semi false sigh of relief.
Knowing it was silly to think that way in the first place. She always found herself expecting the worst out of everything that randomly occurred, that seemed positive at first. She hadn’t had many girl friends, but had a lot of ‘guy’friends. Girls hated her for that. They blamed her for breakups, when she had nothing to do with them. Trust was an issue.
Needless to say, High school days weren’t her ‘best years ‘. And, she dropped out her sophomore year.
Mirra was a talented writer. She had the guilty pleasure of loving celebrity life, gossip, and had a passion for journalism, current Events, and what was ‘ in ‘. And thats what got her here.
New York. The biggest city she had ever been in.
As she stared out the big window in her living room, She noticed, she lived on a crummy side of town… not like the ghetto, but poor middleclass, that hadnt had any city work done in a long time. She saw a lot of young kids around and only saw a few older couples.
‘Cheap prices. Lots of us. Wow. ‘She thought. “I’m going to meet a lot of people.” Realizing that Sadie wasn’t the last encounter she would have with someone who lived close by.
She just wasn’t good with those situations. It wasn’t that she didn’t like them. She had a type of anxiety, which she took medication for.
Her heart started beating fast, thinking of everything in a spiral.
“Damn Anxiety. This is awful. I have to find a doctor here. “She then thought. “No, that’s one more step towards permanency staying here. No “.
Mirra sat on the couch. And just waited for Sadie to come back. She poured another drink. And turned on her Television.
“What was I thinking?”
She picked up a Newport Sadie had left for her. Lit the end, and put her feet up. As she grabbed the makeshift ashtray, she flung herself back onto the couch.

Unraveled - Chapter 1: Moving
Mirra - 23 year old Female
“That just doesn’t sound right. “ Mirra said as she flew down the stairs. It was her first time In New York, and as she discovered, a little more preparation was in store if she were to go on a trip like this again.
“OK, Third, to.. What? “She stumbled through the makeshift map she printed out that morning, and as she started to panic, “Birch! Finally! “She got on the platform, and awaited her shuttle. Noticing, since she had calmed down, that there were many people around her.
She saw a Homeless pair, in the right corner, and immediately felt empathy. Saw People that had watches worth more than she made in a month. And people of every ethnic background imaginable.
Coming from a small town, Mirra, never had to deal with issues like these, and seeing them first hand, she knew was going to change her perspective on life, and help her route her path.
That’s why she was here after all. She received an internship right out of college. She had wanted to work for US weekly, but that didn’t exactly pan out. She ended up at a small end Celebrity Gossip magazine, slash online community.
But, she knew that, patience was a virtue. Right?
What better way to figure out where you want to go in life, then to take the second rate version first? She had hoped that she would emerge on top, be noticed, and everything a 20 something year old is naïve enough to believe. She had it all planned out.
Anything to get out of Floureden. She hated it there. Small, Remote. And surrounded by corn and beans. Rodeos, and a lot of farm life. In the Midwest. Unless you came from a ‘City ‘ you will understand.
Population 10,047 Home of the Bobcats.
She packed into the tram.
“I can’t wait to get to the apartment “ she said under her voice. It smelled awful. But, seemed to bug no one else, so she just kept a straight face.
The doors opened. She stepped from the platform onto the ramp, and made her way up the stairs. Even though she was only staying here, ‘temporarily ‘ she didn’t want to live in a hotel. She found a small apartment for lease, on an upper level. There were 3 other apartments in the building.
After stopping at a grocer, she proceeded to the apartment. She had her things delivered there. Lucky break really, she had no money to pay for it, and her dad just so happened to come around for once that year. He had money, but was more of… the friend type, than the father type. She knew he meant well, and if it made him feel better to give her money, when he felt bad for not coming around. She was happy to take it. She needed it more than he knew anyway, it saved her So much work having to move everything, and buy new stuff herself.
She approached the door. It was green, paint chipped, and apparently, someone had tried to break in a couple times.
“nice. “ she inserted her key.
“ Ok. Apartment, 3. Three… Three.. “ She walked upstairs, “ Three. Gotcha .”
She opened the door to what surprised her to be a clean, nicely painted, living space. Nothing magical, but… “ Nice!” she whispered. Not wanting to appear like a lunatic… Just in case they could hear through the doors.
“ Time to Move in.. she thought “ hoping … it would only be for a short stay, before she got her big break. She started unpacking, as she ate with her left hand. Going through her pictures, and trinkets first.
After she got halfway through she decided. “Time for a drink “…She sat down, poured some rum. But quickly, fell asleep before she could have one sip.
